Kanakantapa man kills his wife and commits suicide, leaving their seven months old child

A 26-YEAR-OLD MAN of Kanakantapa Resettlement Scheme has allegedly killed his wife before taking his own life after a suspected marital dispute.

The unsettling discovery occurred on Sunday this week around 17:00 hours, when a concerned neighbour noticed the absence of the couple from their farmhouse since morning.

Alarmed by this, the neighbour decided to check and found the house securely locked, although the cries of the couple’s seven-month-old baby could be heard from within.

Police deputy spokesperson Danny Mwale said the neighbour mobilised other neighbours and together they forced the door open and discovered Dorcas Chirwa aged 20 lying unconscious in a pool of blood while her se-month-old baby was sucking the breast.

He said the husband was seen hanging on the rafter of the roof.

“Immediately Police were alerted and visited the scene. The couple was rushed to Chongwe District Hospital where they were both pronounced dead upon arrival. The bodies were deposited in the same Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem,” he said.

Mr Mwale said the baby was handed over to the hospital staff for safe custody.

“Dorcas Chirwa was found with a deep cut on her head and a stool which is believed to have been used in the act was picked by Police officers to help with investigations. The incident is believed to have occurred between October 14, 2023 around 21:00 hours and October 15, 2023 around 16:00 hours.

The deceased couple was a property caretaker at one of the farms in F village area located in Kanakantapa Resettlement Scheme in Chongwe District,” he said.

Mr Mwale said couple is said to have had marital disputes and received counselling on several occasions.

He said the owner of the farm is reported to be outside the country and efforts to locate the relatives of the deceased are ongoing.

Meanwhile, Police received a report in which a human skeleton was discovered at a named farm in New Kasama area in Lusaka.

He said the owner of the farm while patrolling his farm area, discovered a human skeleton and immediately called his neighbours who, together after a thorough search, discovered a faded chitenge material tied to a tree about 30 meters away from the scene.

“Later, one of the Neighbours identified the chitenge material to be that of her niece identified as Lydia Siachetema aged 13 who was reported missing on February 11, 2023 around 08:00 hours.

Police officers were alerted and rushed to the scene. Investigations revealed that the chitenge material matched with the description in the report recorded about the missing person on February 11, 2023,” he said.

Mr Mwale said the remains of the deceased were taken to the University Teaching Hospitals mortuary awaiting post-mortem, while investigations to establish the actual cause of death are ongoing.
