50kg bag of maize costs k500

Some residents in the valley area of Lumezi District are reportedly purchasing a 50 Kilogram bag of maize at about 500 Kwacha.


Shadreck Nkhoma a resident revealed that some business individuals are taking advantage of the hunger situation which has hit some parts of the district by over pricing the commodity.


Nkhoma has called on government through Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), to consider sending maize to the area so that affected families can purchase the commodity at an affordable price rather than being exploited.

Last week DMMU in Eastern Province announced that it will commence physical assessment on the hunger situation in various districts including Lumezi so that appropriate support can be rendered.
