Dec private jet

The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has detained 10 suspects (9 foreigners and 1 Zambian) in connection with the seized private jet that was scheduled to leave the country with at least US$11 600,000 cash, weapons and gold.

Among the suspects are 6 Egyptians, 1 Spanish, 1 Dutch 1 Nevisian who were on the plane carrying 6 cases of gold estimated to weigh over 600 kilograms.

Speaking when he gave an update on the operation that was conducted last night at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, DEC Director General Nason Banda said that there is a high possibility of there being more individuals connected to the same.

Banda explained that the jet came from cairo Egypt, with intent to conduct illegal activities in Zambia, though it is not known if the persons involved are politically inclined or not.

He said that another jet, whose make is King Air B-90 belonging to a local airline, has been seized in line with the same investigations, adding however, that it would be premature to pre-empt details of the investigation, but assured that a comprehensive report will be availed to the public in due course.

Banda says officials from the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development are still verifying the suspected gold, to ascertain what kind or if at all it is real gold, while officials from the Bank of Zambia confirmed that the dollars were genuine and have since been taken into the custody of the central bank.
